Some Assembly Required

Just a few pictures of this week's creations.  I finally tried my hand at assemblage...

Yesterday was my Mom's birthday. Usually, as expected, I'm in a numb state. Yesterday however I decided to put my energy in to something worthwhile instead. Basically this is my first attempt at any assemblage type jewelry. Everything on it has personal and sentimental meaning to me.

1. Watch face: was my Mom's but the band was broken beyond repair.
2. Pennies: I dapped are my children's birth years.
3. Mother of pearl buttons: are a recent find that came out of my husband's grandmother's sewing box.
4. Photograph was my maternal grandparents wedding day. I printed a copy, then adhered it to a pressboard cutout.
5. Stamped brass oval: July 31st is our wedding date, but also the day my Mom passed away.
6. Hummingbird: When my Mom fell ill we moved her hummingbird feeder to where she could see it. She never saw a single one. The day she passed away there were at least 15-20 that kept coming to feed.
7. Sterling frozen charlotte: My mom owned a daycare, and I made a mold of one of my charlottes, then made this little charm out of PMC (my first ever using silver clay).

All hand forged copper, soldered copper flowers, mother of pearl beads, and vintage crystals and rhinestone rondelles.

I've made another necklace, as well as a brooch, but they are part of my Flap Your Wings challenge...so come back Saturday to see their reveal!!

  1. What beautiful work! Love the copper rings and flowers, and love using vintage pieces from my mom as well. Really nice

  2. Both necklaces are beautiful. Love the circles and appreciate all the work you put into your pieces. But, that first necklace is an amazing, inspiring piece of art. You really did put your energy into something not only worthwhile but something to be treasured forever! I love it and you've inspired me to do something similar - my sister is in possession of my maternal grandmother's broken diamond watch.....thank you!

Thank you for the inspiration - my sister is in possession of our maternal grandmother's broken diamond watch....after seeing what you've done with your mom's watchface I'm sure we could come up with something to honor our grama's memory. Thanks for that!

  5. Well, that was a masterful first attempt! Both are beautiful. I love the sentiment behind all of the pieces in your first necklace. Your story about the humming birds reminds me; not quite a year after we lost our 19 year old son I was at the cemetery sitting beside his grave and having a little pity party for myself. I looked around at all of the clumps of clover that were growing (the grass didn't come in very well) and said out loud, "For crying out loud in all the time I come here I haven't even found one 4 leaf clover." I found 10 of them that day.
